Synopsis

Or in other words, The Back Cover:

Life can be hard for a young woman in her late teens, particularly if she’s running flat out down a subway with a fistful of stolen jewellery in her pocket. You’d really have thought that by this point in your life you’d have gotten it together by now.


Ophelia vaulted over the ticket barriers amidst cries of outrage. Her trailing coat hem snagged on something and she wasted precious seconds to get it free. Then she was away, hurtling down the stairs four at a time with what little breath she had left. The train was still standing, doors closing, Ophelia practically threw herself through them and collapsed onboard.


Staying hidden below the line of windows, it was only when the train was well clear of the platform that Ophelia finally let out the sigh of relief she'd been holding in. 


The train itself was mostly empty, apart from a girl with dull-blonde hair who couldn't be any older than herself, sitting by the door where Ophelia had landed and watching her intently. Probably a tourist, Ophelia figured, to be exclusively wearing clothes which were either artfully ripped, skull patterned, or covered in an interesting amount of spikes.

Much like herself, in fact, because as well as her coat which draped down to her heels practically everything that she ever wore was black...
